Overview

The EEA/EU and Swiss National Family Member Visa is for non-EU citizens who are immediate family members of an EEA/EU or Swiss national and intend to travel to the Czech Republic together with their family member.

This visa allows eligible applicants to apply with fewer required documents and be exempt from the visa fee, provided they can demonstrate their relationship with the EEA/EU or Swiss national and travel together.

Czech Republic Eligible family members include:

  • Spouse
  • Registered partner
  • Children under 21 years old
  • Parents (if dependent and cohabiting with a child under 21 years old)

If the applicant is not travelling with their EEA/EU or Swiss national family member, they cannot apply under this category and must instead apply as a Tourist Visa applicant with all required documents and applicable visa fees.

Eligibility

To apply for an EEA/EU and Swiss National Family Member Visa, applicants must:

  • Hold a valid passport or travel document.
  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.
  • Prove their relationship to an EEA/EU or Swiss nationalusing official documents (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.).
  • Travel togetherwith their EEA/EU or Swiss national family member.

Additional conditions:

  • If travelling alone, the applicant must apply as a Tourist Visa applicant
  • All supporting documents must be recent (issued within 30 days)and presented in original + photocopies unless specified otherwise.

Czech Republic Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months beforethe intended travel date.
  • The standard processing time is 2 weeks, but additional time may be required based on nationality or embassy requests.
  • For certain nationalities, processing may take 3 weeksdue to mandatory consultation with other Schengen states.
  • Applicants should book appointments early, especially during peak travel seasons (Easter, summer holidays, and Christmas), as slots fill up quickly.
  • The embassy may request additional documents or interviews, which could extend processing times.

Standard Documentation

Completed Visa Application Form

  • Fully filled, signed, and submitted in original.

Passport (Original + Copy)

  • Signed and valid for at least 90 days beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen Area.
  • Issued within the last 10 years (extended passports older than 10 years are not accepted).
  • Contain at least 2 blank visa pages.
  • Include copies of previous Schengen visas (if issued within the last 3 years).

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Photograph (Original)

  • Recent passport-sized colour photo meeting Schengen visa requirements.

Supporting Documentation

EEA/EU and Swiss National’s Identification

  • Original passport or ID card of the EEA/EU or Swiss national.
  • Photocopy of the passport bio page or ID card.

Proof of Relationship

  • Apostilled marriage certificate, birth certificate, or registered partnership document.
  • If the document is not in English or Czech, an official translation by a certified UK-based translator is required.
  • If the document is not apostilled, the standard visa fee will apply.

Proof of Cohabitation (if applicable)

  • Utility bills, tenancy agreement, or official documents proving that the applicant and the EEA/EU or Swiss national live together at the same address.

Proof of Travel Together

  • Confirmed return travel tickets (flight, train, coach, or ferry) showing:
    • Names of the applicant and the EEA/EU or Swiss national family member.
    • If booked through a travel agency, an invoice, receipt, or payment confirmation must be provided.
  • If travelling by car:
    • Driver’s driving licence, car registration, and insurance.
    • Ferry or Eurotunnel booking showing the car registration number and names of passengers.

Travel Insurance

  • Must be issued by a UK-registered insurer and valid for the entire stay in the Schengen Area.
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical emergencies and repatriation.
  • The insurance policy must clearly mention the applicant’s name.

Additional Requirements for Minors (Applicants Under 18)

In addition to the standard documents, minors must provide:

  • Birth Certificate – Apostilled, and if not in English or Czech, a certified translation is required.
  • Parental Consent Letter – Signed by both biological parents, confirming consent for travel.
  • Parents’ Passport Copies – Copies of bio pages and signature pages.
  • Proof of Sole Custody (if applicable) – Court order or death certificate if one parent is deceased.
  • Legal Guardianship Proof (if applicable) – Guardianship letter and passport copy of the appointed guardian.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit two recent passport-sized photographs that meet the following specifications:

  • Size: 3.5 x 4 cm (approximately 1.2 x 1.6 inches).
  • Background: Light, plain background (white or off-white) to ensure clear facial visibility.
  • Colour and Quality: High-resolution, in colour, and printed on normal photographic paper (camera print), preferably non-glossy.
  • Pose: Full face, facing forward with forehead and ears visible.
  • Expression: Neutral, with a closed mouth (no smile).
  • Accessories: No sunglasses, hats, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Age of Photo: Taken within the last 6 months from the date of application.
